Veronese (Paolo Caliari)
St. Jerome as a Hermit

1566
Location: Church of St. Peter Martyr, Murano, Italy
Provenance: Church of St. Jerome, Murano (now destroyed)

The lion is St. Jerome's attribute. Though he is portrayed in austere circumstances the artist has given him a loincloth of the elegant red velvet worn by medieval cardinals to refer to his earlier service for Pope Damasus.
